New B Cell Lymphoma Therapy Is Presented
HOUSTON -- U.S. medical scientists say they've found indolent B cell lymphoma patients respond well to a new three-drug combination therapy. The researchers from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas said the drug combo also spares patents prolonged and potentially lethal suppression of blood production in the bone marrow. The drugs -- pentostatin, cyclophosphamide and rituximab -- together provide the same remission rate as other combinations, but with minimal long-term bone marrow suppression, said Dr. Felipe Samaniego, an associate professor in M. D. Anderson's department of lymphoma and melanoma. The researchers said bone marrow suppression, or myelosuppression, leads to production of fewer...
Hope For The Holidays: Experts Offer Cancer Patients And Their Families And F...
BOSTON -- The holidays can be a festive and joyful time. But for those going through cancer treatments, it can be stressful and full of anxiety. Treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation, can be time consuming and exhausting. For many patients and their families the thought of preparing for the season may be more than they can handle. "Don't be afraid to ask for help," says Ursula Matulonis, MD, the director of the gynecologic oncology center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "For many patients, tasks such as shopping, baking, and decorating may be overwhelming or impossible. It's important to slow down, take time to rest and not worry about getting everything done." Matulonis stresses that communication is key in hel...
New Data Demonstrate Significant Improvement In Progression-Free Survival For...
SAN ANTONIO -- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced new data from studies of IXEMPRA(TM) (ixabepilone) plus capecitabine compared to capectabine alone, including a pre-specified sub set analysis demonstrating a significant increase in progression free survival (PFS) in patients with triple negative breast cancer. The study results - which are from a pooled analysis of approximately 2,000 patients enrolled in two Phase III clinical trials of IXEMPRA (046 and 048) - were presented today at the 2008 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS). Patients studied were either resistant to or pretreated with anthracyclines and taxanes. In the pooled analysis of the subset of 443 patients with triple negative breast cancer...
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Memgen Announce New Chronic Lymphocytic L...
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and Memgen, LLC jointly announce the beginning of a new clinical trial of ISF35, a cancer vaccine, at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). LLS is collaborating on this trial in the hopes that it will speed the development and approval of a novel approach aimed at treating patients with fludarabine refractory and/or 17p deleted chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Doctors at UCSD have already begun treating the first patient with ISF35. They plan to enroll up to twelve patients. These patients will receive a vaccine expressing an immune-boosting molecule, ISF35 (Immune Stimulatory Factor 35), followed by three courses of rituximab plus the chemotherapy drugs fludarabine and cyclophosphami...
Prostate Cancer Drug Reduces Testosterone Levels In As Little As 3 Days
More than 95 per cent of men who took degarelix for prostate cancer saw their testosterone levels fall dramatically as early as three days after they started treatment, according to a paper in the December issue of BJU International. They also experienced much greater falls in their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels at 14 and 28 days than men taking leuprolide. Researchers from Canada, the USA, France, Denmark and the Netherlands studied 610 men as part of the Phase Three trial, randomly assigning them to one of three study groups. "Androgen deprivation hormone therapy is an effective response to prostate cancer, but the drugs that are most widely used cause an initial rise in testosterone - the hormone we are trying to reduce...
Aspirin Said No Protection Against Colorectal Cancer
Aspirin doesn't protect a certain group of people at high risk of suffering colorectal cancer, a Creighton University researcher and others have found. Dr. Henry Lynch, director of Creighton's Hereditary Cancer Center, said aspirin appears to work for some in the general population as preventive medicine against colorectal cancer. But for those with Lynch syndrome, which is named after Creighton's Lynch, aspirin doesn't accomplish that purpose, according to a study published Thursday in "The New England Journal of Medicine." Lynch was one of numerous researchers involved in the study. Lynch syndrome is a gene mutation that increases one's risk of colorectal cancer and some other cancers. Lynch said about 3 to 5 percent of colorecta...
New Targeted Fluorescent-Imaging Compound Allows Researchers To Detect Viable...
Researchers have developed a new type of imaging compound that allows them to visualize viable breast cancer cells that have spread to the lungs in mice. The compound binds to a protein called HER2, which is found on the surface of some breast cancer cells, and it glows, or fluoresces, only when taken inside living cells. This method of targeting and activation allowed researchers to detect specific types of live cancer cells in a mouse model of breast cancer. The study, by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and in Japan, appeared online Dec. 7, 2008, in Nature Medicine. Previously developed fluorescent compounds that are activated inside the body's cells have...

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Geron Corporation today announced the presentation of interim data at the 2008 meeting of the American Society of Hematology in San Francisco, CA, for its ongoing clinical trial of GRN163L, a telomerase inhibitor drug, in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. This study of GRN163L as a single agent is one of six ongoing clinical trials recruiting from 18 U.S. medical centers examining the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug, alone or in combination, in solid tumors, chronic lymphoproliferative disease, multiple myeloma, lung and breast cancers. Phase I Study of GRN163L in Patients with Relapsed and Refractory Multiple Myeloma An interim anal...

Healthlinx Finds 98% Accuracy In Ovarian Cancer Test Trial
MELBOURNE -- Diagnostics developer HealthLinx Ltd has trialled a new test for ovarian cancer, saying it has a 98 per cent accuracy rate in early stage diagnosis. The results of the initial trial on its second-generation test compares with a 60 percent accuracy rate for the world's most commonly used diagnostic, CA125, HealthLinx said on Monday. For the new test, HealthLinx substituted two new biomarkers - which highlight the presence of particular compounds in the blood and other body fluids - for two of the five biomarkers in its existing ovarian cancer diagnostic, OvPlex. OvPlex, the first-generation test, was launched in October. The company said it had a 92.9 percent accuracy in early stage diag...

CROSSWICKS, N.J. -- The Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Foundation announced today that a subanalysis of the AZA-001 phase III international clinical trial shows that treatment with VIDAZA (azacitidine) can extend overall survival and reduce the risk of death in elderly higher-risk MDS patients. Dr. John F. Seymour of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Victoria, Australia presented the analysis at the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology in San Francisco. The results showed that 55 percent of patients in the trial had significantly higher overall survival rates at two years when treated with VIDAZA, as compared to patients treated with conventional care regimens (CCR). "Dr. Seymour's analysi...
